There is a long list of factors that go into being in the precise location at that exact moment. That exact moment when time stands still, when your heart starts to beat out of your chest. That exact moment you notice how sweaty your palms are from the pure adrenaline running through your veins. That moment when the fish of a lifetime appears from the shallow water. As I don't think I can begin to explain all of the nuances of fly fishing in this article. I can however bring some light on my experiences with the best fly fishing locations in southern Louisiana. And hopefully get you in the right spot for this truly incredible experience. Hopedale LouisianaHopedale Louisiana is the most constant place for incredible fly fishing in Louisiana. The vastness of the marsh and its location provide the backdrop for some of the best saltwater fly fishing in the world. The deeper water flats surrounding the marshes in this area provide the perfect habitat for really big redfish. Hopedale doesn't have as much fresh water influence as other destinations in Louisiana. This allows the water clarity to stay fishable year around. Venice LouisianaThe river of grass! Venice Louisiana is a magical place when it comes to saltwater fly fishing. For part of the year the mighty Mississippi River slows its roll and allows for saltwater intrusion into the mashes surrounding Venice Louisiana and the Mississippi River Delta. Late summer and early fall these fertile waters clean up making Venice a fly fishing paradise of sorts. Just like Hopedale, Venice boast many fly fishing world records. When the conditions are right Venice Can't be beat and is truly one of the best places to fly fish in Louisiana. The woodland plantation is 40 minutes from the southernmost point of louisiana and it's settled right on the banks of the mississippi. Built in the 1830s, it was originally a sugar cane plantation and in 1998 the owner Foster Creppel moved a historic church left abandoned in the bayou to the plantation and renovated it to the Spirits Hall you see today. The Best Fly Fishing Opportunities in south LouisianaEvery month of the year provides exceptional fly fishing opportunities in the coastal Estuaries of south Louisiana . As a full-time fly fishing guide in South Louisiana I can’t begin to tell you what my favorite month to fly fish is. I’ve seen so many amazing things every month. All these factors make it challenging to pic a favorite. Every month has its share of less then favorable that can make playing the game of shallow water sight fishing down right challenging. But when the conditions get right, and the fish are happy you need to be there! We can look at patterns, tides and past experiences to try to reenact an accurate pattern of when the potential best time to be there might be. But at best there just an educated guess as to what might happen. Regardless of what month it is. South Louisiana offers a multitude of flyfishing opportunities. Fly fishing for bull redfish is better here than anywhere else in the world. But your angling abilities need to be on par. To meet the challenges of saltwater fly fishing. Simple practice on your 15 to 30ft short shots is a game changer. Do it till your fast, efficient and your don’t think about it. The fly just goes where you tell it to!
