A lot of preparation goes into planning any fly fishing trip. The Marshes of Southern Louisiana are no expectation. The list is huge, you've got all your rods, cloths, sunglasses, fly lines, socks and so on. One of the most important and often overlooked item is your flies. Let's take a few mins to get some real information on what flies you need to have in the box for Louisiana fly fishing. 

Umpqua's Captain Gregg is a great fly for a lot of situations fishing redfish in Louisiana. Named after the master himself and longtime mentor of mine this fly will produce if you put it in the right spot.

Ep's Louisiana Crab 2/0 in all colors rooter Is probably my favorite.

The Plantation Crab , Brian of mad river outfitters has been tying this fly for awhile and we've had great success with it in numerous different scenarios. 

The Sandbar Mullet is a great fly for bull red fish and black drum in Louisiana. It a lot of body that moves a ton of water help the fish see it good in dingy water. Giving you some awesome shallow water eats is what this fly does.

Rio's Hopedale Crab In any color this fly catches everything that swims in Louisiana.

Basically any 1/0 or 2/0 hook with med eyes and some feathers will catch redfish in southern Louisiana. So don't be scared to tie some of your own patterns. Crab , shrimp and mullet patterns are a goto for redfish flies. Tan, Black, olive, purple, chartreuse and yellow are all great colors to try as well. I hope this helps get that fly box full. Fly fishing in Louisiana's saltwater marshes is a must do year around. All four seasons Louisiana's vast maze of marshes host some of the best fly fishing in the world. This one of a kind ecosystem host fly fishing anglers a lot of opportunities at redfish and other saltwater species.

Every year in March the marshes of Southern Louisiana  comes alive. The spartina grasses turn from brown to a vibrant green color. Canals are lined with slow moving alligators sunning for warmth and the fly fishing starts to heat up as well. It's that magical time of year when Louisiana's marsh eco system transitions to spring.

As the days get a little longer the red fishing starts to heat up. Large bull reds feed in the shallow waters along Louisiana' Gulf coast. Black drum and sheepshead also frequent the same areas and are wonderful targets on fly. Most of the times these fish are spotted tailing in shallow ponds. And let me tell you a 30lb drum tailing is an amazing sight.

In the world of saltwater fly fishing timing is everything. No matter if it's spending countless hours developing the perfect back cast or planning your next big fly fishing trip. You've gotta get the timing right.
The most frequently asked question we get is "when is the best time come fishing".  So I wanted to share my thought with you on the best time to fly fish in Louisiana.   

Southern Louisiana is a great fly fishing destination to visit. Its climate provides fly anglers opportunities at great saltwater fishing year round. With over 7,700 miles of coast line Louisiana offers a variety of different opportunities to catch some really great fish on fly. 

When it comes to the best time to fly fish in Louisiana. There isn't a bad month to fish. All year long Louisiana produces great shallow water fly fishing . The size and diversity of the marsh make it one of the best saltwater fly fishing destinations in the world. No matter the time of year fly fishing in Louisiana is an amazing experience.

Answering the age old question of the best time to go fly fishing can be a little tricky. As a season guide I still get a little overwhelmed when predetermining the success of a fishing trip months are even years in advance. The conditions change year to year, month to month and even day too day. So I feel its best to be prepared for what ever mother nature throws at you. 

So here is a break down of what to expect.

January - February 
 
In-between the cold fronts we have some amazing fly fishing opportunities in the state of Louisiana. This is a great time year for targeting the interior shallow marsh ponds. The tides are generally low and the water is very clear making for great sight fishing for bull reds and black drum. 
Mother Nature might have other ideas and you will need to be flexible.  Be ready to change plans for the conditions. High winds and clouds can make sight fishing tuff somedays. Redfish Dynasty guides change the program and go to blind casting flies or throwing plugs or soft plastics on spin gear when the weathers tuff. There's always a chance at a trophy redfish no matter the conditions.
January and February are great months to plan a fly fishing trip to Louisiana. Don't let the weather scare you off this is one of the best times for insane fly fishing action on large schools of bull redfish.

March & April

Spring is in the air! Flowers are blooming, tides are getting higher and the fish get happy. I can't say enough about all the saltwater fly fishing opportunities Louisiana offers in the spring. The marshes come alive with an invasion of shrimp, crabs and bait fish. on the flats. The warmer temperatures turn the fishing on fire. Louisiana redfish are hungry and ready to eat a well placed fly. 

May , June, July
 Summer is possibly one of the best times to fly fish in Louisiana And it's pretty simple why. The summer weather patterns are very consistent. The best weather patterns we get in Southern Louisiana are in May, June and July.. Big bull redfish and black drum tail and feed most of the day in the summer allowing for some absolutely wonderful fly targets.

August & September

This is probably my favorite time to fly fish in southern Louisiana. The days are hot and long and the fishing is generally on fire. It's probably not the best time to go fly fishing in Southern Louisiana as described by most. Because the heat and chance of thunderstorms in the afternoons.  But if you like truly monster redfish this is the time! If you're interested In world record fishing August & September  would be my recommendation for your best shot. 

If you like to fish with conventional equipment August & September is one of the best months for red fishing in Louisiana. Schools of pre spawn redfish invade Southern Louisiana. The topwater plug bite is insane most mornings.  
 
October , November & December 

 October, November &December are traditionally known as the "Best months to fly fish  for redfish in Louisiana". It's been wrote over and over again. I can't argue with them the fishing can be truly amazing. But it's like any other season of the year in southern Louisiana. When it comes to fly fishing the conditions usually dictate your fishing success. With the transition from summer to winter there is definitely a little fluctuation in the fall weather patterns. So it best to be prepared at whatever mother nature throws at you. 

Louisiana has amazing fly fishing opportunity's year around. There is never a bad time to come explore the marshes for some fly fishing fun. We catch bull redfish all year long! Some days are just better than others. This holds true every month of the year. The important part is that you come go fishing and experience what Louisiana fly fishing is all about.

In real estate they say it's all about location! I would say the same holds true when it comes to the incredible fly fishing in Louisiana. It's all about location, but where is the best place to fly fish in Louisiana? With over 7,700 miles of coastal shoreline Louisiana host many of the best saltwater fly fishing destinations in the world. But with so much area how do you possibly pick the best place to go fly fishing in Louisiana.

 Saltwater fly fishing in Louisiana is all about being in the right place at the right time. There is a long list of factors that go into being in the precise location at that exact moment. That exact moment when time stands still, when your heart starts to beat out of your chest. That exact moment you notice how sweaty your palms are from the pure adrenaline running through your veins. That moment when the fish of a lifetime appears from the shallow water.
As I don't think I can begin to explain all of the nuances of fly fishing in this article. I can however bring some light on my experiences with the best fly fishing  locations in southern Louisiana. And hopefully get you in the right spot for this truly incredible experience.

Hopedale Louisiana is the most constant place for incredible fly fishing in Louisiana. The vastness of the marsh and its location provide the backdrop for some of the best saltwater fly fishing in the world. The deeper water flats surrounding the marshes in this area provide the perfect habitat for really big redfish. Hopedale doesn't have as much fresh water influence as other destinations in Louisiana. This allows the water clarity to stay fishable year around.   

The river of grass! Venice Louisiana is a magical place when it comes to saltwater fly fishing. For part of the year the mighty Mississippi River slows its roll and allows for saltwater intrusion into the mashes surrounding Venice Louisiana and the Mississippi River Delta.
​Late summer and early fall these fertile waters clean up making Venice a fly fishing paradise of sorts. Just like Hopedale, Venice boast many fly fishing world records. When the conditions are right Venice Can't be beat and is truly one of the best places to fly fish in Louisiana.
