There isn't a bad month to fish. All year long Louisiana produces great shallow water fly fishing . The size and diversity of the marsh make it one of the best saltwater fly fishing destinations in the world. No matter the time of year fly fishing in Louisiana is an amazing experience. Answering the age old question of the best time to go fly fishing can be a little tricky. As a season guide I still get a little overwhelmed when predetermining the success of a fishing trip months are even years in advance. The conditions change year to year, month to month and even day too day. So I feel its best to be prepared for what ever mother nature throws at you. So here is a break down of what to expect. January - February In-between the cold fronts we have some amazing fly fishing opportunities in the state of Louisiana. This is a great time year for targeting the interior shallow marsh ponds. The tides are generally low and the water is very clear making for great sight fishing for bull reds and black drum. Mother Nature might have other ideas and you will need to be flexible. Be ready to change plans for the conditions. High winds and clouds can make sight fishing tuff somedays. There's always a chance at a trophy redfish no matter the conditions. January and February are great months to plan a fly fishing trip to Louisiana. Don't let the weather scare you off this is one of the best times for insane fly fishing action on large schools of bull redfish. March & April Spring is in the air! Flowers are blooming, tides are getting higher and the fish get happy. I can't say enough about all the saltwater fly fishing opportunities Louisiana offers in the spring. The marshes come alive with an invasion of shrimp, crabs and bait fish. on the flats. The warmer temperatures turn the fishing on fire. Louisiana redfish are hungry and ready to eat a well placed fly. May , June, July Summer is possibly one of the best times to fly fish in Louisiana And it's pretty simple why. The summer weather patterns are very consistent. The best weather patterns we get in Southern Louisiana are in May, June and July.. Big bull redfish and black drum tail and feed most of the day in the summer allowing for some absolutely wonderful fly targets. August & September This is probably my favorite time to fly fish in southern Louisiana. The days are hot and long and the fishing is generally on fire. It's probably not the best time to go fly fishing in Southern Louisiana as described by most. Because the heat and chance of thunderstorms in the afternoons. But if you like truly monster redfish this is the time! If you're interested In world record fishing August & September would be my recommendation for your best shot. If you like to fish with conventional equipment August & September is one of the best months for red fishing in Louisiana. Schools of pre spawn redfish invade Southern Louisiana. The topwater plug bite is insane most mornings. October , November & December October, November &December are traditionally known as the "Best months to fly fish for redfish in Louisiana". It's been wrote over and over again. I can't argue with them the fishing can be truly amazing. But it's like any other season of the year in southern Louisiana. When it comes to fly fishing the conditions usually dictate your fishing success. With the transition from summer to winter there is definitely a little fluctuation in the fall weather patterns. So it best to be prepared at whatever mother nature throws at you. Louisiana has amazing fly fishing opportunity's year around. There is never a bad time to come explore the marshes for some fly fishing fun. We catch bull redfish all year long! Some days are just better than others. This holds true every month of the year.
